Movie News Today

Jodie Foster has signed on for "Elysium," the new project of Neill Blomkamp ("District 9") that also features Matt Damon and Sharlto Copley. This movie gets more interesting all the time.

Ever since I saw "Tron: Legacy" a couple of weeks ago, I've been a bit fascinated by Olivia Wilde. Not because she's gorgeous, which she clearly is, but because she doesn't seem to be able to act AT ALL. She seems to be in demand, though, having been brought on for "Welcome to People" starring Chris Pine, and I feel like I'm missing something with her.

I've got a whole series of end-of-year review type columns coming up (Top 10 performances, 10 Worst Movies, Full Movie Rankings, etc.). My colleague over at Movie Muse has given us the Genre Awards, picking the best movie in each category of film. Good read.

Some foreign outlets are reporting that "Monsters Inc. 2," scheduled for a 2012 release, will actually be a prequel. Honestly, I don't care. I trust Pixar so implicitly that they could tell me this was going to be a video slide show of two dudes running through Central Park wearing "Monsters Inc." costumes and I'd be there on opening day.

Finally, the most important and saddest news of the day, legendary character actor Pete Postlethwaite has died after a long fight with cancer. Postlethwaite is one of the very best "I know that guy" actors to have graced the screen in the last 20 years and 2010 was a great year for him, having played small yet important roles in "Inception" and "The Town." He had a quality about him that drew you to his character no matter how small he might be. Quite simply, he will be greatly missed. Rest in peace, sir.
